Energy Efficiency in Priority for Sector Reforms
2014-02-27

Measures towards energy efficiency have been declared as a priority reform agenda in recently concluded Nepal Economic Summit 2014 jointly by Government of Nepal (GoN) and Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI). Reading out the 19 point declaration during the concluding session of Nepal Economic Summit 2014, Mr. Madhu Kumar Marasini, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance announced government giving priority to energy efficiency for resolving the immediate gap of electricity demand and supply.
Excerpt from declaration – related to energy efficiency

12. In order to resolve the immediate gap of electricity demand and supply and encourage efficient use of energy, demand side management will be given priority. Following Nepal's commitment to climate change conventions, specific incentive and packages will be developed and offered to industries that practice energy efficient processes and technology including industries that practice cogeneration. We will introduce these incentive packages in the upcoming budget of fiscal year 2015/16.

Energy efficiency has been portrayed as a viable option for accelerating Nepal’s economic growth.  The issue is extensively discussed on “discussion paper on Promoting Investment in Sustainable Energy Solution in Nepal” jointly by GoN and FNCCI on the same occasion. The first economic summit was organized jointly by GoN and FNCCI in Kathmandu from 24 to 26 February 2014 in Kathmandu.
